From the Editor…

Celebrating a forgotten gem

Like fashions that seem to come and go, so does the popularity of certain models of car. What was once the darling of the drag strips and the king of the streets, can all too quickly fall from grace and find themselves in the unenviable position of the great automotive unloved. On occasion the slide into obscurity is inevitable with manufacturers wildly missing the mark with certain models, however, others seem to simply slip off the radar without any real justification. And it’s the models in the latter group that can often find their fortunes turned around. Be it through the skyrocketing prices of other more recognised models highlighting the comparative value of their lesser known rivals, or simply someone modifying one and making a strong statement, the rebirth of a model is certainly something to celebrate.

Toyota’s MR2 is one such forgotten gem. A car that was extremely popular in the late ’90s and early 2000s, but seemed to drop like a stone around a decade ago. But as they say, when you hit rock bottom, the only way left is up, and as the MR2 now celebrates its 35th birthday, the model is once again climbing in value and catching the attention of tuning fans all over again. One man that is taking no small part in the model’s resurgence is Nathan Freke. Back in 2009, he was the MR2 World Record holder, a title he since lost when his drag car was written off in an accident. Fast forward 10 years and Nathan’s back, with a new car and a new World Record. We go under the skin of this incredible machine to see what it takes to become the reigning King of the MR2 dragstrip.

And if that doesn’t inspire you to get on the MR2 bandwagon, then have a read through our MR2 Turbo buying and tuning guides. Go through the stages that we’ve laid out and you could have an MR2 with not only Ferrari-rivalling looks, but performance, too!

But don’t worry if you’re still not convinced, as there’s plenty more for non-MR2 fans to get excited about in this issue, too, such as the stunning Spirit Rei PS13, the carbon-clad Evo VIII or the wild flip-wrapped Subaru WRX and much more!

Until next month, enjoy!
