From the Editor…

20 years on top

A lot has changed in the Japanese tuning scene in the last two decades. Technology has advanced, new subcultures have evolved and horsepower figures have gone through the roof! But one thing has remained constant, and that’s the unyielding passion that remains for the genre, from both the individual owners and the tuning industry itself. Even when Japanese manufacturers seemed to momentarily fall out of love with the idea of producing truly hot versions of their models in favour of a fleet of achingly vanilla alternatives, the tuning scene didn’t slow down. In fact, it took on the challenge of creating exciting models itself, by modifying the lacklustre machines coming out of the factories and turning them into cars that enthusiasts such as us could be proud of and enjoy. And it has been this devotion that has allowed Japanese Performance magazine to still be going strong a full 20 years after it launched. And in a world where the likes of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram have effectively shortened our collective attention spans to 280 characters or less, that’s some achievement.

So to continue entertaining you – hopefully for another double decade – we bring you this special anniversary issue. Inside you’ll find the bonkers Rocket Bunny-kitted twin-turbo V8-engined S15 owned by Elliott Brown, the immaculate Frankenstein-engined EG Civic built by Matt Powney, and the Panspeed RX-7 bought and improved by Matthew Griffin. We’ve also got the legendary Nürburgring record breaking Blitz Supra, 20 top tuning icons, the best 20-year-old buys to tune and race, and a 10 minute tech guide on camshafts. What more could you want?

But as well as celebrating 20 years of this magazine, we’re doffing our caps to the last 20 years of the Japanese tuning scene as a whole. After all, we wouldn’t be here without it. Until next month, enjoy!
