Love Triangles

They have got to be the automotive world’s most misunderstood powerplants. To a large majority of petrolheads they represent a dark, mysterious art akin to voodoo or black magic. But in reality, rotary engines are actually the simplest form of propulsion you can get on four wheels. They are small, light and pack a punch well above what their meagre displacement should suggest. Their only downsides seem to be high fuel consumption and a reputation for being unreliable. However, that too is somewhat misleading as, with proper maintenance, they can last just as long as their piston-powered equivalents. So as a way to try and shed some light on this mystical sector of performance tuning, we decided to dedicate 21 pages of this issue to celebrating all things rotary. We’ve got a report from Japan’s annual 7s day meet at the now legendary Daikoku Parking Area, an historical look back over Mazda’s love affair with these Wankel-powered wonders, and also an in-depth look at how rotaries actually work and try and separate the facts from the fiction of these enigmatic engines. And that’s before you’ve read up on how you can buy and tune one of the best value rotary engined cars (and in fact best value performance cars, full stop), the underrated Mazda RX-8.

If you’re still not sold on rotaries after all that, then never fear as we’ve also got a pair of engine swapped drift machines to drool over, check them out on page 22! There’s also a wide arched Toyota Supra with performance and style to spare, a cool titanium and copper covered Mitsubishi Evo IX, plus an audacious V6-swapped Civic that has to be seen to be believed!

Until next month, enjoy!
